Title: Afghan Girls’ Dreams Shattered as Taliban Bans Women’s Education

In 2021, US troops left Afghanistan and the Taliban took over, promising to maintain women’s education and freedom. However, contrary to their announcement, the Taliban has implemented strict rules against women’s education, causing heartbreak and despair among young Afghan girls.

Reports from Kabul reveal that girls are being denied permission to go to work, barred from attending high and secondary schools, and prohibited from gaining admission to universities. The Taliban has also banned women from going to parks, gyms, beauty salons, and galleries, severely restricting their freedom and opportunities.

The devastating impact of these restrictions is evident in the tears of 6th-grade students who fear that they will never be able to return to school. Thirteen-year-old Bahara Rustam, a student at BB Razia School in Kabul, mourns the end of her school life as final year exams approach, expressing deep sorrow at the thought of never returning to her classroom.

Another student shared the heartbreak of the entire class, lamenting the abrupt end to their dreams of advancing to the next grade and pursuing their educational aspirations.

The denial of education to women in Afghanistan has sparked concern among social activists, who warn that it will reverse the country’s development and stunt the growth of its entire population. Despite these concerns, the Afghan Ministry of Education has stated that women are not barred from studying in religious schools.

As the Taliban’s oppressive policies continue to restrict women’s rights and opportunities, the international community is called upon to address this alarming regression in Afghanistan’s education system and stand in solidarity with the young girls whose dreams have been shattered by the Taliban’s actions.
