‘Imperfect Christmas Tree’ at Central Baptist Church Offers Powerful Message of Hope and Resilience

A handcrafted Christmas tree, intentionally left “imperfect,” has become a symbol of faith and perseverance for the congregation of Central Baptist Church, offering a poignant message of hope as the new year begins. The unique creation, titled “The Imperfect Christmas Tree,” was gifted to the church by a local resident and serves as a powerful reminder that strength and beauty can be found in vulnerability and overcoming adversity.

A Symbol Rooted in Biblical Reflection

The tree was conceived and built by Alexander Barroga, a Marshall resident originally from Hawaii. Barroga explained that the inspiration for the tree’s unconventional design stemmed from his recent Bible studies focusing on John the Baptist. “The tree is nice and everything, but what really inspired me to be able to keep it up the way it was, was the message behind it, and it was through Bible studies,” Barroga said. He noted the contrast between the idealized image of religious figures and the reality of John the Baptist, described as a “wild man” who nonetheless drew people to faith.

Embracing Imperfection as a Reflection of Life’s Journey

Barroga intentionally incorporated imperfections into the tree’s construction – uneven edges, misaligned layers, and a crooked, spiraling path – to mirror the complexities of life. He initially intended to refine the tree, making it “neat and trim,” but realized it already held a deeper meaning. “This tree’s got a message,” he recalled thinking. The resulting design serves as a visual representation of life’s unpredictable journey, acknowledging that setbacks and imperfections are not failures, but rather opportunities for growth.

From Broken Foundation to Steadfast Strength

The creation of “The Imperfect Christmas Tree” wasn’t without its own challenges. Barroga spent six days crafting the tree, utilizing carpentry skills learned from his father. Initially, the tree was built with a wooden base, but it proved insufficient, ultimately cracking and falling. This experience became integral to the tree’s message. It was subsequently rebuilt with a steel pole and cement base, symbolizing the need for a strong foundation and unwavering support in the face of adversity.

“At first, it was built with a wooden base… But the weight was too much. It cracked, it broke and it fell,” Barroga explained. “So, it was rebuilt, this time, with something stronger.” He drew a direct parallel to the human experience, stating, “Without a strong base, we break. Without support, we fall.”

A Message of Resilience and Growth

The tree’s message extends beyond simply acknowledging hardship; it emphasizes the importance of resilience and continued growth, even when the path ahead is unclear. “Even when the path spirals instead of pointing straight ahead, we keep moving upwards, still growing, still reaching,” Barroga said. He powerfully articulated that “imperfection is not failure. Falling is not the end. Sometimes, it’s a lesson that teaches us what kind of foundation we need to keep reaching for the stars.”

The tree was initially displayed at Barroga’s workplace, Good Shepherd Continuing Care, before being presented as a gift to Central Baptist Church.

A Blessing to the Congregation

The impact of “The Imperfect Christmas Tree” on the Central Baptist Church community has been profound. Kathleen Gillihan, Barroga’s Sunday school teacher, expressed her awe at the gesture. “It is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen,” she said. “He did it with his hands, and it took him hours and hours and hours. It’s just totally God. What a blessing we got!”

The tree stands as a testament to the power of faith, the beauty of imperfection, and the enduring human capacity to overcome challenges and find strength in vulnerability.
