“The extraordinary beauty of the Colosseum and the Forum continues to amaze entire generations of visitors who flock from all over the world. This is demonstrated by the great success recorded this summer with over 2,200,000 tourists who purchased a ticket to enter the archaeological park admiring, thus, in addition to the Flavian Amphitheater, also the Roman Forum and the Palatine. Important numbers, which describe a renewed passion for the ancient and in particular for Roman history. A success that fills us with pride, the result of continuous work that has lasted for years and for which I thank the director of the Park, Alfonsina Russo, and all the workers involved. For the future the objective is to further increase the offer, as recently happened with the inauguration of the Domus Tiberiana and the panoramic lift , and to raise the quality of services”. This was declared by the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, commenting on the access data to the Colosseum archaeological park which saw the purchase of 2,277,139 tickets for the visit in the months of June, July and August 2023 of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine, with an increase of 315,493 tickets, +16% compared to the same period of 2019 (1,961,646 tickets) and with an average of approximately 25,000 daily visitors.

A result made possible also thanks to the expansion of the cultural offer offered to visitors in 2023 with the opening of new spaces within the Park to the public. In the Colosseum the new panoramic lift has made the upper levels and the attic accessible to a public with mobility difficulties, then access to the basement (open to the public in 2021) with a multimedia installation and an exhibition dedicated to gladiators, what remains of the cryptoporticus connecting with the Ludus Magnus (the gladiator gymnasium).

In the Roman Forum and Palatine, the most significant opening concerned the monumental Domus Tiberiana, the oldest imperial palace, usable again after almost 50 years. Still on the subject of new openings, since last June the Domus Aurea has also been accessible every day (and not just on weekends) with the possibility of visiting the exhibition “The Beloved of Isis. Nero, the Domus Aurea and Egypt”, along a route that also includes frescoed rooms previously closed to the public.
