Quang Ninh Province Pioneers Advanced Healthcare with Kidney Transplants and Specialized Centers
Table of Contents
A new era of specialized medical care is unfolding in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam, marked by successful kidney transplant programs and a strategic expansion of healthcare infrastructure. Driven by recent legislation and a commitment to improving patient outcomes, the province is rapidly becoming a regional hub for advanced medical treatments.
The push for enhanced healthcare capabilities began on January 9, 2023, with the passage of the Medical Examination and Treatment Law 2023 by the National Assembly. Subsequent Decree 96/2023/ND-CP clarified provisions within the law, establishing a framework for classifying professional competence in medical facilities. This led to a comprehensive evaluation of institutions within Quang Ninh Province by the Health department.
By December 2024, three clinics – the Provincial Hospital, the Uong Bi Vietnam-Sweden Hospital, and the Bai Chay Hospital – had been officially classified as specialized medical facilities. This momentum continued into 2025 with the Ministry of Health’s recognition of Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital as a specialist hospital, formalized in Decision No. 712/QD-QYT-TTHC on December 10, 2025.
Expanding Expertise in Maternal and Pediatric Care
The newly designated Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital is prioritizing the development of advanced procedures in key areas, including assisted reproduction, newborn care and resuscitation, and cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment methodologies. A key focus is on bolstering the skills of its medical personnel through ongoing training and research, with the goal of reducing the need for patients to seek care at more distant, specialized hospitals. “We are committed to improving treatment effectiveness for mothers and children within Quang Ninh Province,” stated a hospital administrator.
Landmark Kidney Transplant Program Takes Root
Perhaps the most significant development is the establishment of a successful kidney transplant program. On April 8, 2025, a collaborative effort between the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital and the Provincial Hospital, in partnership with the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital, resulted in the simultaneous completion of two kidney transplants. This ambitious undertaking involved nearly 200 medical professionals – doctors, nurses, technicians, and specialists.
To date, the two hospitals have collectively performed seven kidney transplants, offering a life-changing treatment option for patients suffering from end-stage kidney failure. This achievement underscores the growing importance of organ donation within the region and demonstrates Quang Ninh’s commitment to developing locally state-of-the-art medical procedures. The province aims to expand its capabilities to include other organ transplant techniques in the future.
Bai Chay Hospital Leads in Patient Volume and Advanced Techniques
Bai Chay Hospital has also experienced significant growth, examining over 418,000 patients – exceeding its plan by 110.2% – and treating more than 51,000 inpatients through 2025. The hospital completed over 10,000 operations and provided over 12,000 radiation therapy treatments, achieving a patient satisfaction rate of 99.7%.
The hospital’s success is attributed to its experienced medical team and modern equipment, enabling the continuous refinement and development of advanced techniques in fields such as oncology, endoscopic spine surgery, hip and knee joint replacement, 3D endoscopy, complex trauma treatment, plastic surgery, cardiovascular intervention, tumor embolization, and cerebrovascular intervention. .
A Province-Wide Expansion of Specialized Care
Recognizing the increasing demand for high-quality medical services, the Quang Ninh Province health sector is developing a comprehensive plan to expand specialized medical services across its health facilities. This ambitious plan includes the establishment of several new centers:
- A center for cardiovascular diseases, spine surgery, diagnostic imaging, and interventional radiology (Provincial Hospital)
- An oncology center
- A center for training and international cooperation
- A center for quality management and social work
- A center for traumatology and orthopedics
- A Urology, Andrology, and Pelvic Floor Center (Bai Chay Hospital)
- A center for prenatal diagnostics, reproductive medicine, and genetics (Quang Ninh Children’s Hospital)
- A hyperbaric oxygen therapy center (geriatrics and rehabilitation clinic)
- A smart emergency response center
This strategic expansion is driven by Quang Ninh Province’s unique position as a large, densely populated area and a major tourism and service center in northern Vietnam. Investing in specialized healthcare is seen as crucial to improving local treatment capacity, reducing referrals to distant facilities, and ultimately, meeting the evolving healthcare needs of both residents and visitors.
The advancements in Quang Ninh Province’s healthcare system represent a significant step forward in providing accessible, high-quality medical care to its population and solidifying its position as a leading healthcare destination in the region.
