It was 2002, Odón Elorza was still mayor and that night he didn’t know where to go, completely embarrassed. But she, María Jiménez, seasoned in all the battles, continued singing: “Happy birthday…”. When she finished, the singer still had another spark of wit. “Mayor, we have a lot in common, because I live in Villaviciosa de Odón.” Elorza, with as much speed as kindness, left the set. “Thank you very much, Maria.” It was one of the great nights of Keridos Monstruos on teletxikita. We liked explosive cocktails and they worked that day. The first part of the program was an interview with Elorza and the second, a talk with María Jiménez, who was coming to San Sebastián for her umpteenth reinvention.
The next day was the mayor’s birthday and we suggested that the artist come onto the set by surprise and sing ‘happy birthday’ in a koxkero-folkloric version of Marilyn’s ‘happy birthday’ to Kennedy. And she did it, with all her panache, before a sad-faced Odo. Then we interviewed Jiménez and she gave a caste recital. Her team had suggested that we put whiskey in the cup instead of water. And there it was, a salty half hour. “Is it over?” she protested. «If I still have a lot to tell…». That force of nature, the woman who, among other things, gave new energy to Sabina’s classics, has gone out this week. Today we remember that one of her ’19 days and 500 nights’ could well have been that of Teledonosti.
