In Belarus, the ban on the import and sale of goods from the Liqui Moly, Škoda Auto and Beiersdorf groups of companies has been extended until the end of 2024. This is provided for by government decree. The current ban expires on November 4, meaning the restrictions have been extended for more than a year. Previously, they were extended several times for six months.

A ban on the import of products from the Beiersdorf group of companies (its most famous brand is Nivea), Liqui Moly and Škoda Auto was introduced on May 5, 2021. This restriction has been extended several times, most recently from May 5 to November 4 this year.

This time, officials decided to extend the restrictions until December 31, 2024.

The ban was explained by the protection of national interests and “unfriendly actions towards the Belarusian people.” And the authorities considered the refusal of these brands to sponsor the 2021 World Hockey Championship if it was held in Belarus to be unfriendly actions. This decision was made by global brands in connection with human rights violations in our country.

How the story of the ban on famous brands in Belarus developed

The decision to ban the products of these companies, coincidentally or not entirely coincidentally, was adopted shortly after the brands refused to sponsor the World Hockey Championship if it were to be held in Minsk.

“Nivea Men stands for respect, unity and against all forms of discrimination and violence. Seeing the current situation, we have decided that the NIVEA MEN brand will not sponsor the 2021 World Cup if it is held in Belarus,” the company announced on social networks.

“We are big hockey fans. We have been a partner of the Ice Hockey World Championship for 28 years. However, we also respect and promote all existing rules to protect human rights as a fundamental and common requirement throughout the world. Škoda will refuse sponsorship of the 2021 World Cup if Belarus receives the right to host this event,” Škoda Auto said.

The statements of three well-known companies in the world then resonated. As a result, Minsk was deprived of the championship, leaving the right to host it only to Riga.

Soon after this, the Ministry of Health announced that the sanitary and epidemiological service had found violations in Nivea products. It is noteworthy that before this, the brand’s cosmetics were sold in the country without problems for many years, and violations were discovered only after a loud statement from the company. Moreover, even after a complete ban on the import of products from these brands, the remaining stock, including those in which violations were allegedly found, continued to be sold off.
