DISPATCH — This Wednesday, August 2, China unveiled new anti-addiction legislation that will ban Internet access for minors overnight, while limiting daily connection time. However, parents can deactivate this control if they wish.

In China, young people under the age of 18 will soon have to sleep without their smartphones, and their daily connection time will be limited. Under these restrictions, which should come into force on September 2 after a regulatory public consultation, no minor should be able to access the internet via a mobile terminal between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

In addition, a system will also be introduced to limit the daily time of internet connection on smartphones: 16-17 year olds will be entitled to two hours, against only 40 minutes for children under eight years old.

With these new rules, among the strictest in the world in this area, the Chinese Cyberspace Administration seeks to “create a secure and healthy internet environment for minors” by reducing “the addiction of minors to the internet”.

If they want, however, parents can deactivate the technical means put in place for the ban.

In any case, the announcement caused the downfall of several Chinese companies in the internet sector. As AFP reports, in Hong Kong, Tencent stock (video game, messaging, online payment) lost nearly 3% and Baidu stock (search engine, artificial intelligence) fell 3.75% .
