The dentist and researcher Eduardo Anitua was in charge of closing this edition of the Finance Forum at the Miñano Technology Park. The president and scientific director of the BTI Biotechnology Institute took the opportunity to present the success model of his research center to ask for “reciprocity” in international trade within his sector, that of biotechnology.

Anitua gave concrete examples of the inequality that companies in this branch – many of them Basque companies – suffer right now when it comes to exporting. “It took us seven years to get certified in Japan, we haven’t even tried in China and to get certified in Brazil you have to pay 40% tariffs,” he described in reference to his own company. On the other hand, the firms from those countries “sell in Spain without paying any tariffs,” said the manager.

That is why it seems necessary, in his opinion, “that we have rules of the game of international trade that are complied with and that whoever does not comply with them is left out of the party.” «Isn’t that something that seems logical? Well, in biomedicine it is not like that.

The lack of respect for patents by countries like China is perhaps the clearest example of these risks for the biomedical sector, but bureaucracy is also a burden, which in Europe is growing, in their eyes, to a point where which is “lethal” for the continent’s firms.

«It seems that Europe is determined to trip itself up. “We tightened the screw in such a way that we are going to be less competitive,” she lamented. “If we do not implement reciprocity at all levels we are doing ‘canelo’ at majestic levels,” she warned.

Health, a heritage

Anitua also referred to the pandemic, which he said has been a missed opportunity to “be aware that our greatest asset is not our companies or our family, but our health.” «Being healthy is very important. “It makes you see the day differently,” she said.

“I think we should not lose the opportunity to become aware and see, in turbulent times, great opportunities to be happy, to do something for others and not just for our companies,” he told the audience. “We need to be aware that each of us not only steers the ship of our companies, but we also steer the ship of our health and we must also pay attention to it,” he recommended to the business community.

The doctor also focused on the risks of smoking, a phenomenon that he said he even warns his company’s workers about. “We haven’t stuck very closely to the script, but that’s very much my style,” he confessed with a laugh shortly after his plea against smoking.

Regarding Covid, the director of BTI Biotechnology also recalled how it was experienced in the company, which began to focus on training and research during that time. Furthermore, he has assured that we are not exempt from the possibility of a new pandemic emerging. “There is an enormous, real risk,” he noted, while he stressed the fact that we have not known in depth the causes of covid, so we have not learned from it. “We have wasted time,” he noted.
