The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) strengthens services in establishments that are part of the province of Galapagos. The Minister of Health, José Ruales, during his visit to San Cristóbal Island, announced the start of the Telemedicine service.

This initiative allows patients residing in the Insular Region to receive specialized care through a virtual connection with specialist doctors from various hospitals in the country. This care model includes dermatology, endocrinology, neurology, otorhinolaryngology, vascular surgery and cardiology services.

The patient who requires specialized attention and who, due to his condition, cannot be transferred to the mainland, is attended via telematics. The doctor performs an evaluation to determine the need for prompt intervention and treatment.

From the Oskar Jandl Hospital, the connection of a patient residing on San Cristóbal Island with doctors from the Abel Gilbert Pontón Specialty Hospital, located in the city of Guayaquil, was evidenced. The user was benefited with the telemedicine service.

Currently, the operational capacity for this service is installed on the islands of Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal and Isabela, one of the furthest islands of the Archipelago. It is expected to provide more than 250 specialized services until December 2023 in the areas of internal medicine, dermatology, psychiatry and endocrinology.

The health authority mentioned another important line of action for the benefit of the population of Galapagos. The roaming of specialists, a strategy that strengthens services in the region, since doctors in the specialties of urology, otorhinolaryngology, gastroenterology, neurology, cardiology and neuropediatrics travel periodically from the mainland to provide their services in the Galapagos Islands.

Since January 2023, the date on which the roaming program for specialists was implemented, 714 people have been treated through this process at the Oskar Jandl Hospital (San Cristóbal) and 282 consultations have been registered at the Republic of Ecuador Hospital (Santa Cruz). .

With the itinerary of specialists, the number of referrals to the continent due to surgical procedures is reduced. For example, in the first semester of 2022, without the roaming program, 105 surgeries were performed, to date the figure has tripled with 296 interventions at the Oskar Jandl Hospital.

Just today, itinerant doctors from Guayaquil from the neuropediatric and neurology specialties dialysers visit the Oskar Jandl Hospital for medical attention to scheduled patients.
