The Oversight and Political Control Commission held a session on Friday, July 12, in order to listen to the demands of the social and productive sectors of the island province of Galapagos, as part of the process of controlling the execution of public policies related to the care of the population of the islands.

In this context, Sandra Cotoche, representative of the commercial sector, expressed the need for the authorities to address the demands of this economic segment, which has suffered significant losses and for which neither the Government Council nor any other institution has given explanations in this regard. She requested information on what will happen with the ship that will join the fleet to transport cargo from the continent to the islands.

Zenaida Freile, from the San Cristóbal Citizen Council, stressed that there is abuse of power in the Galapagos Government Council. One of them was the unconsulted increase in the entry fee to the islands for national and foreign tourists, by five hundred percent in the case of national tourists and one hundred percent for foreign tourists, a measure that affects the tourism sector, which is one of the most important sources of income for the population.

Wilman Cox spoke about the protection of marine iguanas, among other species, whose conservation is essential to maintaining the biodiversity of the islands, so that the Galapagos remains a World Natural Heritage Site.

Galo Herrera stressed that since 1974, when there was a Superintendent of the Galapagos National Park, actions were taken to conserve the islands. Today, the park rangers only do office work and do not worry about taking care of nature, which is why he suggested that an audit be carried out on the management currently carried out by the Galapagos National Park.

Luis Ricardo Alvarado, acting president of the legislative body, thanked the citizens for their contributions and pledged to continue the work of the Commission to monitor compliance with public policies for the Insular Region.
