On a visit to Guyana until May 5, the Secretary of State for the Sea, Hervé Berville, signed on Wednesday May 3 in Cayenne a tripartite agreement to relaunch the fishing industry in this overseas territorial community.

This plan aims to “respond to the emergency”he said, calling for “occupy the maritime space” to fight in particular against illegal fishing which is undermining the sector. With this in mind, an envelope of two million euros of private funds provided by the shipowner CMA-CGM will be granted. A windfall “immediately available”which may allow “the acquisition of more modern ships in the next six months”said Mr. Berville in a press release.

The text, co-signed by the State, the regional fisheries committee (CPMR) and the local authority of Guyana, also provides for the installation of a maritime affairs unit in Iracoubo, halfway between Cayenne and Saint-Laurent, most populated cities of the French department of South America.

It will also focus on training, with the creation of a CAP fisherman at the Matiti agricultural high school by September 2024, announced the Secretary of State. The workforce in the sector is made up mostly of foreigners and, for lack of administrative documents renewed in time, many find themselves unable to work.

“A month ago, the prefecture opened more than sixty appointments” of regularization, assured Mr. Berville. But the deadline was not tenable for the Fisheries Committee, retorted its chairman, Léonard Raghnauth, claiming to have received “67 meeting proposals to honor three days later”.

In addition, an emergency and crisis unit will be set up to support companies in this sector in difficulty.
