In Hungary, an anti-LGBTQ referendum on “child protection” backed by legislative elections

On Sunday April 3, Hungarians are invited to vote on four questions in an anti-LGBTQ-tinged referendum on “child protection”, organized on the same day as the legislative elections:

• Do you approve of the teaching of sexual orientation to minor children in educational institutions without parental consent?
• Do you approve of the promotion of sex reassignment treatments for minors?
• Do you approve of the unrestricted presentation to minors of media content of a sexual nature that could affect their development?
• Do you approve of the presentation of media content on gender reassignment to minors?

This consultation follows a controversial law of June 15, 2021, prohibiting the “promotion” and the “representation” of homosexuality and transidentity in advertising, publishing, the media and in schools.
