The famous Brazilian festivities are held from Friday 22 to Saturday 23 April.

The return of “Greatest Show on Earth”. The start of the carnival in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) was given on Friday April 22 in the evening, after two years of absence due to Covid-19. Throughout the night, six samba schools followed one another on the “sambadrome”, a 700-meter avenue lined with crowded bleachers. The Imperatriz samba school was the first to step forward, with its monumental golden floats and some 3,000 dancers and drummers in white and silver costumes.

Six others will parade in the night from Saturday to Sunday, to conquer the title of champion of this 2022 edition. The Rio carnival is being held this year two months behind schedule, the authorities having preferred to postpone this giant party due to of the Omicron variant.

The previous edition had been canceled due to the pandemic. Brazil is the second most bereaved country in the world by Covid-19, with more than 660,000 dead. The health crisis has also plunged the country into recession.
