Iran, dozens of MPs called for permission to create nuclear weapons“/>
A group of Iranian lawmakers sent an official letter to the Supreme National Security Council of the Islamic Republic, calling for permission to develop nuclear weapons in the country. The initiator of the appeal, parliamentarian Hasanali Ekhlaki Amiri, announced this in a commentary for the Didban Iran portal, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.
According to him, the letter was signed by 39 legislators.
“The subject of the letter is a request to reconsider the defense doctrine of the Islamic Republic in the field of nuclear weapons,” Hasanali Ekhlaki Amiri clarified.
The deputy added that parliamentarians decided to take this step due to the increased threat to the country from Israel.
On October 3, The New York Times published a story saying that Iran would need several months to a year to create its own nuclear weapons.
But, as observers noted, even if there is a breakthrough in this area, the Islamic Republic will have to take “a number of other important steps” before it has truly operational nuclear warheads. In particular, we are talking about creating an electronic system for activating a group of explosives necessary to start a chain reaction and release atomic energy.
