The number of DDoS attacks worldwide in the first half of the year grew by 11%, reaching 5.4 million. Such data was published by Atlas VPN, a computer security company. Thus, the number of attacks in the first half of the year turned out to be a record one. More than half of the attacks – 2.8 million – were carried out by botnets (computer networks with hacker software, including those designed for such attacks).

The largest number of DDoS attacks occurred in Europe, the Middle East and Africa – more than 2 million attacks. North America accounted for 1.3 million DDoS attacks, Asia-Pacific region – 1.2 million, Latin America – about 550 thousand.

Earlier Atlas VPN published data on the number of DDoS attacks by country. The leader in terms of their number in June was the United States (they accounted for 35.3% of all such attacks), followed by the United Kingdom (29.4%) and China (18%). Russia accounted for 2.1% of DDoS attacks.

In early September, Yandex announced a DDoS attack on its services, which it assessed as the largest in the history of the Russian Internet.
