The United States has entered into a $13 billion contract with American aircraft manufacturer Sierra Nevada Corporation to develop a new “doomsday plane” for American leaders. As Day.Az reports, Reuters writes about this.
The Air Force said Friday it has awarded a $13 billion contract to Sierra Nevada Corporation to develop a successor to the E-4B, known as the Doomsday Plane.
It is noted that the project of the new aircraft of the US Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) is intended to replace obsolete aircraft from the 1970s, which are approaching the end of their service life. Work on the aircraft modification will take place in Colorado, Nevada and Ohio and is expected to be completed in 2036.
Typically used to transport the U.S. secretary of defense, the E-4B is designed as a mobile command post capable of withstanding nuclear explosions and electromagnetic effects, allowing U.S. leaders to deliver orders to the military in the event of a national emergency, the agency said.
The E-4B is also capable of mid-air refueling, has conference and briefing rooms and advanced communications equipment.
The USAF currently operates four E-4B aircraft, at least one of which remains operational at all times.
