NHK reports that Tokyo police arrested a man who took a hostage at a restaurant. The name of the perpetrator is reported – Akito Araki.

The man came to the restaurant and handed the manager a note threatening to blow up the establishment. Araki then pulled out a knife and took the manager hostage, allowing the rest of the visitors to be evacuated outside.

The arriving police negotiated with the invader for three hours. Law enforcers persuaded him to release the manager, who was taken out through the back door. Then they threw a flash grenade into the room and detained Araki.

The man had two knives and a phone box with him, which was allegedly a bomb. During a conversation with the investigator, the offender admitted that he went to the hostage-taking out of a desire to be sentenced to death.
