New Delhi and Beijing agreed to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas and maintain regular contacts to resolve issues arising along the border. This was stated in a statement by the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the 29th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultations and Coordination on Border Issues between the two neighboring countries held on March 27 in Beijing, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“The parties held an in-depth exchange of views on how to achieve complete disengagement and resolve outstanding issues along the Line of Actual Control in the western sector of the India-China border,” the document says.

The text also notes that India and China “agreed to maintain regular contacts through diplomatic and military channels, and also noted the need to maintain peace and tranquility on the ground in the border areas in accordance with existing bilateral agreements and protocols.”

The lack of a demarcated border between India and China in the Himalayas (the two countries are separated by the Line of Actual Control) has remained a source of tension for decades. Relations between Beijing and New Delhi sharply deteriorated in May 2020, when a confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops began in Eastern Ladakh. It was led to clashes at Lake Pangong Tso between military personnel of the two countries. Skirmishes were repeated in June in the Galwan River valley and resulted in casualties on both sides. After a series of negotiations at the military and diplomatic levels, India and China gradually began mutual withdrawal of troops from disputed areas on the border.
