India has arranged to drown people by opening dams: Jamaat

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has claimed that the Indian government has made arrangements to drown the people of Comilla region of Bangladesh by opening the dam.

Expressing deep concern over the overall flood situation in Comilla, Noakhali, Feni, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and other districts, Secretary General of the party and former MP Professor Mia Golam Parwar made this demand in a statement on Wednesday.

He said, ‘Floods in Comilla region have taken a terrible shape due to the opening of Dumbur Dam in the state of Tripura, India. The Indian government has arranged to drown the people of Comilla region of Bangladesh by opening this dam. So far 7 people have been reported killed. We are deeply concerned about this inhuman act of the Indian government.

Professor Mia Golam Parwar said, ‘In the last few days, heavy rains and landslides from upstream have caused severe floods in Comilla, Noakhali, Feni, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Chittagong, Rangamati, Khagrachari and other districts. Vast areas of the country have been flooded. Noakhali’s Maizdi has accumulated knee-deep water. In all the 9 upazilas of the district, houses, rural roads and educational institutions have been submerged in flood water. 20 lakh people are getting stuck in water. This much water has not been seen in the last 50 years. 310 mm rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours, which is the highest ever.’

People in all areas of Phulghazi, Parashuram and Chagalnaya upazilas have become waterlogged. More than 40 villages of Sadar Union, Anandpur, Munsirhat, Amjadhat Union of Fulgazi Upazila and more than 45 villages including Mirzanagar, Chithlia, Buxmahmud and Town of Parshuram Upazila have been submerged in water. In this direction, numerous residential houses, rural roads and educational institutions of several unions of Kulaura, Juri, Rajnagar, Kamalganj and Sadar upazilas of Moulvibazar district have been submerged in water due to continuous heavy rain. At least two lakh people have become waterlogged. Vehicles are unable to move. Roads and houses have sunk. Residents are looking for shelter in such a situation.’

Expressing deep concern over the dire flood situation, the Secretary General of Jamaat said, ‘I strongly demand the government to quickly rescue the water-bound people and give them shelter in a safe place and to send dry food, cash, medicine and medical supplies and medical teams to the affected areas.’

At the same time, he urged the countrymen to stand by the flood victims.
