Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam said that India has expressed interest in working on the infrastructure development of Bangladesh including the development of bridges, culverts and roads.

He said this after a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Pranay Kumar Verma appointed to Dhaka in his office at the Secretariat on Thursday (February 15) afternoon.

In response to the questions of the journalists about what was discussed with the High Commissioner, the minister said that we discussed the improvement of the common people of the two countries through cooperation with the neighboring country India. Various issues of local government were also discussed. We have Union Parishads, they have Panchayats there. Like our Upazila Parishad, they also have Upazila Parishad. How they can be made more effective, how they are working, how we are doing, came up in the discussion.

He said, we will not only learn from India, they also have to learn from us. These issues also came up in our discussion. Through discussion we may be able to identify more effective methods. We also talked about training the manpower of each other’s countries.

In reply to the question whether there was any talk about investment, he said that India wants to invest a lot in Bangladesh. They have expressed interest in infrastructure development here. For example, they have interest in our market management and agricultural farms. We will exchange experience accordingly by identifying their success and our success in this field.

The minister said that they have expressed their interest in the development of bridges, culverts and roads of the local government. In this case they will provide financial support. Besides, we work with dengue. They have an outbreak of Aedes mosquitoes in Kolkata, West Bengal. That is why we are interested in working together to control this outbreak.

He said, in the discussion that took place today, we will review and tell them what development projects we can take from our side. They have expressed interest in financing it.
