New Delhi: The government is preparing to take a big step in the aviation sector. Soon there will be one airspace in the country. India is moving ahead with plans to streamline its airspace management to increase efficiency and reduce emissions. The initiative aims to bring the country’s airspace under a unified command center which is being built in Nagpur. The country’s airspace covers 2.8 million square nautical miles and is divided into four zones. The initiative aims to ‘unify’ the country’s airspace. The strategic move will help optimize air traffic management, officials told ET. This will benefit airline companies through cost savings and better security measures.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated the process by inviting bids from consultants to acquire technology from global companies and implement advanced technology solutions for a single air traffic management system. This entire process is estimated to take eight years. This includes infrastructure development, controller training and migration to the new system. Once fully operational, the integrated airspace strategy will enable airlines to identify more efficient flight routes. This will reduce travel time and fuel consumption. This will also improve the operation efficiency of airline companies.

Senior air traffic control officials say that currently the task of coordinating flights in different areas is challenging and centralized control in Nagpur will help a lot in this. An official said that currently when an aircraft passes through Indian territory, controllers have to hand it over to another territory. This requires a lot of coordination, especially on busy air routes. Once a single unified sky is achieved, about 75-80% of the controllers will be located in Nagpur. This will reduce the need for coordination. This will also reduce stress and fatigue for controllers. Routes can be restructured with a single coordination. This will open up more fuel efficient routes for aviation companies.
