India wrapped up its campaign at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with 85 total medals, securing fourth place in the standings after capturing nine medals on the final day of competition.

The multi-sport competition concluded with a strong finish as Indian athletes claimed five gold, two silver, and two bronze medals on the final Saturday on the final day of the event. Across more than 14 days of competition, 495 athletes represented the country across 36 different sports out of the total contingent sent to Japan. The final medal count settled at 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze.

China led the overall standings with 341 total medals, including 169 gold. Japan finished second with 269 total medals and 83 gold, while South Korea took third place with 150 medals and 39 gold. Uzbekistan rounded out the top five behind India with 70 total medals and 21 gold in the final regional table.

Gold Medal Finishes in Hockey, Cricket, and Wrestling

The men’s hockey team defended its title by defeating Malaysia 5-1 in the final, securing the fifth Asian Games gold medal in program history. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice, while Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh, and Shilanand Lakra each added goals after Shello Silverius opened the scoring for Malaysia in the 14th minute during the first quarter. The victory earned the men’s squad direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics alongside the women’s team, marking the first time both Indian hockey teams won gold at the same edition of the Games according to tournament records.

On the cricket pitch, the men’s team claimed gold by defeating arch-rival Pakistan by 19 runs in the final. In wrestling, Aman Sehrawat secured the second wrestling gold for the country by overcoming his North Korean opponent in the men’s freestyle 57 kg category after a tense bout.

Individual Victories in Archery and Golf

Seventeen-year-old archer Kumkum Mohod claimed gold in the women’s recurv individual event following a shoot-off against South Korea’s Oh Ye-jin where she shot a perfect 10 to decide the tight contest. In golf, Pranavi Sharath Urs topped the women’s individual stroke play event with a score of 15 under par.

The gold medal performance by the men’s hockey team marked the 21st gold medal for the nation at the current Games, representing the second-most brilliant performance in the history of the Games for the country. The 11th minute saw India awarded a penalty corner, which team captain Harmanpreet Singh converted cleanly. Malaysia responded in the 14th minute when Shello Silverius leveled the score at 1-1. Before the half-time break, Jugraj Singh capitalized on a penalty corner while Harmanpreet Singh was off the pitch, giving the squad a 2-1 lead.

Hardik Singh extended the advantage further in the 42nd minute by scoring on a penalty stroke. Shilanand Lakra added a field goal in the 54th minute, and captain Harmanpreet Singh sealed the 5-1 victory with a final goal in the 57th minute.
