More than 2,000 delegates from 183 countries have converged on Arusha, Tanzania, for the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The nation is hosting the summit at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC), marking a moment for the region.

High-level arrivals kicked off in the early hours of September 30, 2026, when Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary General Ambassador Anda Filip landed at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Her arrival at 01:40 AM signaled the formal beginning of what organizers describe as the largest parliamentary gathering hosted on African soil in the last decade.
Ambassador Filip, who is a Romanian national and career diplomat possessing over 25 years of experience in multilateral diplomacy, was elected in April 2026 during the 152nd IPU Assembly held in Istanbul, Turkey, and officially took office on July 1, 2026. Stepping into this role marked a milestone as she became the very first female leader of the IPU Secretariat across its 137-year history dating back to 1889. Greeting her warmly upon arrival at the tarmac were Hoyce Temu, Tanzania’s Ambassador in charge of the IPU Desk in Geneva, along with the Chairman of the National Committee of Experts for Preparations.
As of the assembly’s opening week, 159 of the organization’s 183 member states have confirmed their participation, bringing an estimated 2,000 delegates to the Tanzanian diplomatic hub. National Assembly Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu noted that 149 confirmations had been logged earlier in the week alongside thousands of traveling professionals.

Indian Parliamentary Delegation Visits Tanzania for Global Debates

Harivansh is scheduled to participate directly in the Governing Council, the General Debate, emergency item debates, and hearings for prospective IPU presidential candidates. Other members of the Indian contingent will engage in working groups addressing democracy, human rights, sustainable development, women’s participation, and emerging technological challenges.
Nepal Parliamentary Agenda on Climate-Induced Disasters
Representing Nepal, House of Representatives Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal leads a seven-member delegation focused on pressing environmental crises. Aryal announced plans to present an Emergency Resolution targeting climate-induced disasters, coordinating with more than 50 nations through the Foreign Ministry ahead of the formal sessions.

Although Nepal has made a negligible contribution to global carbon emissions, it has suffered significant losses from climate-related disasters. Nepal’s delegation also aims to spotlight the inclusive nature of its federal parliament, where more than 37 percent of lawmakers are under the age of 40.

Tanzanian leaders have emphasized that the summit offers much more than legislative debate. National Assembly Speaker Mussa Zungu urged local residents and business operators to use the massive influx of international visitors to establish professional networks and showcase regional goods.
