India Smartphone Shipments Plunge 26 Percent To Ten-Year Low

India’s smartphone shipments plummeted 26 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2026 to 35.8 million units, marking the lowest third-quarter shipment volume since 2016 as memory chip shortages and rising retail prices altered consumer demand.

Memory Chip Shortages and a Ten-Year Low in Shipments

The Indian smartphone market recorded its lowest third-quarter shipment volume since 2016, according to data from market research firm Omdia. Despite the traditional onset of the festive shopping season, total shipments fell to 35.8 million units during the July–September period. Market analysts attribute the contraction directly to escalating component costs. Surging demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure has created a severe constraint on memory chip supplies globally, driving up manufacturing expenses and forcing brands to adjust retail pricing across their portfolios.

Smartphone Sales Crash 20% In India As Prices Soar | Discounts Fail To Prop Up The Market

Retail prices for smartphones worldwide have climbed by roughly 20 percent since the beginning of 2023. In India, where a vast segment of consumers depends on affordable devices, these continuous price increases have heavily disrupted replacement demand. Consumers are holding onto their existing mobile devices for longer periods, leading to a sharp deceleration in new purchases. Omdia’s principal analyst, Sanyam Chourasia, noted that September inventories remained unusually constrained due to limited promotional offers, fewer exclusive product launches, and a scarcity of affordable stock heading into the peak retail window.

Samsung Resumes Market Leadership as Chinese Brands Face Steep Drops

Amid a broad market contraction, individual brand trajectories varied significantly. Samsung emerged as the top-ranked smartphone vendor in India for the third quarter of 2026, reclaiming the leading position it last held in Q1 2024. Samsung recorded 6.7 million shipments, marking a minimal 1 percent decline from the previous year. The company secured a 19 percent market share, aided by sustained demand for its accessible Galaxy A-series models—specifically the Galaxy A07, A17, and A27—alongside trade-in programs, bank cashback incentives, and long-term financing options.

In contrast, major Chinese original equipment manufacturers experienced sharp reductions in shipment volumes. Vivo slipped to second place with 6.4 million units shipped, representing a 34 percent year-over-year drop and an 18 percent market share. Oppo and Xiaomi also absorbed heavy declines, with Oppo shipments falling 24 percent to 4.9 million units and Xiaomi dropping 28 percent to 4.7 million units. Overall, the combined market share of Chinese brands contracted from 75 percent in the third quarter of 2025 down to approximately 68 percent in the third quarter of 2026.

iPhone Shipments in India Fall 20 Percent

Apple maintained a top-five position in the Indian market with 3.9 million iPhone shipments during the quarter, representing a 20 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Sales benefited from steady demand for earlier iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 base models as retailers built up inventory ahead of anticipated price adjustments. The late-quarter release of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models on September 18 provided additional momentum, though the absence of an entry-level iPhone 18 variant at launch left a gap in the lower-tier premium segment.

As replacement cycles lengthen, industry analysts project that sluggish demand will persist into 2027. Total smartphone shipments in India are expected to finish between 132 million and 133 million units for the full year of 2026, down from 153 million in 2025. However, market researchers note that approximately 40 percent of Indian users remain willing to pay higher prices for devices equipped with functional artificial intelligence capabilities, offering a potential avenue for recovery once component supply pressures stabilize.
