UN for December Security Council President Ruzira Kamboj addressed the council’s briefing on Afghanistan on Tuesday and said the international community must work together for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

India will continue to play its role in achieving this objective and the interests of the people of Afghanistan will always be at the center of our efforts, he said.

Ruzira Kamboj said that India is closely monitoring the security situation in Afghanistan and is actively engaging with the international community on Afghanistan-related issues. “Terrorist attacks have targeted public places such as places of worship, educational institutions, especially minorities and embassy complexes. This is a worrying trend,” he said.

Denial of education to women in universities in Afghanistan

Afghanistan’s Taliban-run Ministry of Higher Education on Tuesday suspended female students from entering universities until further notice. The announcement drew strong condemnation from the United States, Britain and the United Nations.

The letter, confirmed by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Higher Education, said the Afghan government instructed public and private universities to immediately stop access to female students, according to a cabinet decision.

The announcement by the internationally unrecognized Taliban regime came as the United Nations Security Council met in New York on Afghanistan.

Excavation of an ancient tomb related to Jesus

An ancient tomb traditionally associated with Jesus’ midwife is being newly excavated by archaeologists in the hills southwest of Jerusalem, the Antiquities Authority said on Tuesday.

The elaborately decorated Jewish burial cave complex dates to about the first century AD, but was later associated by local Christians with Salome, Jesus’ midwife in the Gospels. A Byzantine church was built on the site, a place of pilgrimage and veneration for centuries.

Power shortage in Pakistan

Markets and restaurants across Pakistan have been ordered to close by 8pm, while wedding halls have been ordered to operate only until 10pm, as the cash-strapped country unveiled a desperate plan to conserve energy on Tuesday.

Pakistan is in the midst of a severe energy crisis, high inflation and money laundering. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and devastating floods in June have compounded the country’s energy woes.
