India has successfully conducted the third test of the country’s new generation SMART (short for Supersonic Torpedo Launch System) missile and torpedo system. According to the Republic’s Ministry of Defense, the torpedo was launched from DRDO Successfully Tests New MPATGM Weapon System Against Modern Armored Tanks”>Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

The department noted that the complex contains several technological improvements compared to those already in service. Among them are a solid propellant propulsion system with two stages, an electromechanical drive system, and an inertial navigation system. “During the test, the operation of the symmetrical separation system and control of emission and speed was verified [торпеды]”, the message says.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), which created the system, on the successful test. The head of the department noted that its further development “will further strengthen the power [индийских] Navy”.

India has successfully tested the DRDO development twice in 2020 and 2021. At the testing stage it was called SMART. The lightweight anti-submarine torpedo is located inside the cylindrical body of a supersonic missile. After launch, it spends part of the journey in the air, after which the torpedo is separated using a parachute release system and enters the water, where it hits an underwater target.

The exact characteristics of the SMART system are not officially announced. According to the Times of India newspaper, its main advantage lies in its supersonic speeds when moving in the air and its range, which is “several times greater than the 20-40 km range of conventional torpedoes.” The time frame for completing its testing and entering service has not been announced.
