Washington: To stop India’s path to permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, countries supporting the Coffee Club or UFC model including China, Pakistan, Turkey have started making nefarious moves. These countries have now started insisting on the UFC model of reform in the United Nations Security Council, in which neither the number of permanent member countries would increase nor African countries would be well represented. Sensing this move of the Coffee Club, India on Tuesday demolished the UFC model presented by the Coffee Club at the behest of China from the United Nations platform. India said that the UFC model has many shortcomings and does not serve the purpose of reforms.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj strongly criticized the Uniting for Consensus or UFC model of UN Security Council reform supported by Canada, Pakistan, China. India said that this UFC model will not empower countries in Africa or the Global South or change permanent membership. The UFC is comprised of the Coffee Club’s 12 member nations: Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, San Marino, Spain and Turkey. Apart from this, China and Indonesia are observer countries. These countries are opposing the model of reforms of G4 countries including India.

G4 countries include India, Japan, Germany and Brazil. The Coffee Club member countries are opposing the idea of reforms proposed by most of the UN countries. These countries including G4 demand that the number of permanent and non-permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council should be expanded. Ruchira Kamboj asked at the United Nations, ‘How will the UFC model represent Africa, Latin America and Asia? That too when Africa itself is demanding that membership be expanded in both categories. So is it not appropriate to treat Africa as it has been treated in the past, that is, to make decisions on its behalf?’

Let us tell you that Africa, which has 54 member countries, has long demanded expansion in the number of both permanent and non-permanent members in the expanded United Nations Security Council. Ruchira Kamboj demanded equal treatment with the countries of the Global South. The Indian representative, on behalf of the G4 countries, said that expansion in both categories of the Security Council is ‘absolutely necessary’. For the last few days, Ruchira Kamboj has opened a front for reforms in the United Nations Security Council and is continuously attacking China, Pakistan and their supporting countries. He has said that the Security Council formed during the Second World War is failing to establish international peace and there is a strong need for reform.

China has become a thorn in the side of India, Pakistan is also supporting

Ruchira Kamboj said that UFC’s model of 22 non-permanent member countries will not create checks and balances on the issues related to the already existing 5 permanent member countries. He said that in the United Nations General Assembly we do not operate on the basis of veto. Kamboj questioned whether the UFC was vetoing the entire process by demanding an impossible consensus before negotiations? Let us tell you that in this multi-polar world, India wants a new basis to be created for giving permanent membership. China remains the biggest hurdle in India’s demand for permanent membership.

Analysts believe that China does not want India to become the second country in Asia which is a permanent member and has veto power. China often stops any resolution brought against Pakistan by imposing veto power on it. If India becomes a permanent member, it will increase the problems of both China and Pakistan. Recently, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar had also pointed towards China and said that there is no western country that opposes India’s permanent membership. China was furious at this. He had said that this is being done for the interest of some countries.
