Washington: To stop India’s path to permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, countries supporting the Coffee Club or UFC model including China, Pakistan, Turkey have started making nefarious moves. These countries have now started insisting on the UFC model of reform in the United Nations Security Council, in which neither the number of permanent member countries would increase nor African countries would be well represented. Sensing this move of the Coffee Club, India on Tuesday demolished the UFC model presented by the Coffee Club at the behest of China from the United Nations platform. India said that the UFC model has many shortcomings and does not serve the purpose of reforms.
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj strongly criticized the Uniting for Consensus or UFC model of UN Security Council reform supported by Canada, Pakistan, China. India said that this UFC model will not empower countries in Africa or the Global South or change permanent membership. The UFC is comprised of the Coffee Club’s 12 member nations: Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, San Marino, Spain and Turkey. Apart from this, China and Indonesia are observer countries. These countries are opposing the model of reforms of G4 countries including India.

Ruchira Kamboj said that UFC’s model of 22 non-permanent member countries will not create checks and balances on the issues related to the already existing 5 permanent member countries. Kamboj questioned whether the UFC was vetoing the entire process by demanding an impossible consensus before negotiations?
