Early Setback Quickly overcome
India’s chase of 154 began with a shock as Matt Henry dismissed Sanju Samson for a golden duck on the very first ball. However, the early loss proved inconsequential, as Ishan Kishan responded with a rapid 28 off 13 balls before being dismissed in the fourth over. Despite losing two wickets early,India maintained a strong momentum, largely thanks to Sharma’s explosive hitting.
Abhishek Sharma’s innings was particularly noteworthy, as he reached his fifty off just 14 balls – the second-fastest by an Indian batsman in T20 International cricket, trailing only his mentor, yuvraj singh. Earlier in the match, New Zealand struggled after losing the toss and being asked to bat first. the early dismissals of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra put the visitors on the back foot. Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips attempted a counter-attack, but Seifert fell to Bumrah at the end of the powerplay.
Phillips and Chapman Build Partnership, but India fight Back
Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman forged a crucial 52-run partnership for the fourth wicket, attempting to stabilize the New Zealand innings. However, Ravi Bishnoi broke the partnership by dismissing Chapman, leaving New Zealand at 86/4.
Bumrah Seals the Deal with Late Wickets
Further setbacks followed as Daryl Mitchell and Phillips were both dismissed in speedy succession, reducing New zealand to 112/6. A late cameo from Mitchell Santner (27 off 17 balls) provided some late impetus, but Jasprit Bumrah ultimately removed the New Zealand captain in the final over, restricting the kiwis to 153/9.
