Dhaka: Bangladesh has witnessed internal strife. Anti-reservation protests toppled the government of Sheikh Hasina. Due to this, former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina had to resign and come to India. Meanwhile, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said that India’s official policy towards Bangladesh has completely failed. According to him, the policy was made by powerful civil servants, retired diplomats, thinkers and journalists, who gave priority to security without feeling the political pulse on the ground. According to The Hindu report, BNP’s foreign affairs cell chief Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury urged India to appreciate the popular sentiment prevailing in Bangladesh. He argued that all three elections in Bangladesh in the last decade were fraudulent, where India played the role of a supporter. He warned that if this trend continues, it will take many years for India-Bangladesh relations to recover.
Poison spewed against India
Spitting venom against India, he said, ‘In the case of Bangladesh, this ecosystem created a story that if Sheikh Hasina is not in power, Bangladesh will go into the hands of fundamentalists. If Hasina is not there, India’s security will be in danger. India has to come out of this mindset. South Block should wake up.’ He said that the violence that has happened in recent days could have been avoided if free and fair elections had been held in January this year. He termed this election as fraudulent and expressed disappointment that India recognized it.
There was a demand for fair elections
In 2009, the BNP lost to Sheikh Hasina. The BNP has been demanding elections under a caretaker government. This demand has led to political deadlock on several occasions. In 2014, the BNP boycotted the election as it demanded it to be held under a caretaker government. It boycotted it again in 2018 and 2024. Sheikh Hasina won the election held in January 2024. However, Western countries, including the US, criticized it.
