Indian Metal Bands: Dubai’s Rising Music Hub

Building a Metal Community in the Desert: How One Promoter is Bringing Indian Metal to Dubai

A Bengaluru native is forging a thriving metal scene in Dubai, bringing both established international acts and rising Indian bands to the United Arab Emirates. Vinod Varma, founder of Resurrection Metal Events Dubai, is set to host Mumbai’s Demonic Resurrection (DR) at the upcoming Desert Inferno gig series on November 1, 2025, a testament to his dedication and vision.

Varma, who balances event promotion with a career in digital media, emphasizes the importance of perseverance. “Sahil [Makhija aka Demonstealer, founder and guitarist-vocalist of DR] is always so resilient; he never gives up. This is what it is for me as well. I’m a resilient person, whatever the challenges are. There are ups and downs, but you don’t give up,” he shared.

Founded between 2009 and 2012 alongside promoter Matthew Scott Joyner, Resurrection Metal Events Dubai has steadily grown to encompass a diverse roster of bands. From Dutch metallers Pestilence and German thrash veterans Destruction to Middle Eastern mainstays Nervecell and a wealth of Indian talent including Godless, Gutslit, Kryptos, and Amorphia, Varma has cultivated a network spanning continents.

Varma’s deep knowledge of the metal landscape extends beyond the mainstream. He recalls Oman’s black metal band Arabia, who played his first organized gig in Muscat in 2009, and fondly remembers legendary Bengaluru venues like Chowdiah Memorial Hall and 19 Church Street, once hubs for India’s burgeoning rock and metal scene. His journey began in 2004 with a move to Oman as an “economic migrant,” seeking opportunities beyond the call center industry. Subsequent moves to Bahrain and finally Dubai in 2012 laid the foundation for his current endeavors.

The arrival in Dubai coincided with the peak of the Dubai Desert Rock Festival, which brought global metal icons like Megadeth and Iron Maiden to the region. “It was a great festival also because it was all-ages, we had people coming from all over—Bahrain, Oman, Saudi, Egypt and even Russia. The gathering was fantastic,” Varma noted. However, he initially felt isolated, missing the close-knit metal community he’d left behind in India. This longing spurred him to connect with fellow enthusiasts, eventually leading to collaborations with promoters like Qais Sabbagh and trips to European metal festivals like Wacken Open Air.

After launching his first gig in Muscat in 2009, Varma began building a presence in Dubai in 2012, initially as a metal DJ under the moniker DJ Wynn. This allowed him to cultivate a fanbase and establish relationships with venues. By 2015, he secured the funding to bring Mumbai’s Devoid to Dubai for their first international performance, marking a pivotal moment for Resurrection Metal Events.

Today, Resurrection Metal Events runs monthly shows, with the Desert Inferno series gaining prominence since 2022. Varma funds these events through his day job, personal savings, and income from his DJ gigs. While acknowledging the challenges of securing sponsorships – particularly due to restrictions on alcohol company involvement – he remains committed to providing a platform for metal bands. A chart detailing the average attendance numbers at Resurrection Metal Events over the past five years would illustrate the growth of the fanbase.

Though Indian metal bands had previously performed in Dubai, Varma’s efforts have helped to establish a consistent presence for the scene. Demonstealer, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Demonic Resurrection, views Dubai as a key destination. “I think the deal has been exactly the same, so nothing has changed. It’s [the promoters offering to] cover all your expenses, come and play the show, sell your merch. It’s good,” he stated. The band plans to deliver a career-spanning set, featuring tracks from “A Darkness Descends” to “Dashavatar” and their latest single, “Necromancer” from 2022.

Mumbai’s Gutslit, who first played Dubai in 2018 and returned for Varma’s March Massacre series in 2023 and Desert Inferno in 2024, see Dubai as a valuable stepping stone for European tours. Bassist Gurdip Singh Narang highlighted Dubai’s role as a major travel hub and the enthusiastic, international crowd. “The crowd there is super supportive and it’s a lot of people from all over the world, so when you are playing you have a global exposure,” he added.

Demonstealer echoes this sentiment, praising Varma’s work in building a metal community and infrastructure in Dubai. He envisions a future with a more extensive touring circuit throughout the Middle East, potentially including cities like Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. However, he acknowledges the visa challenges faced by Indian passport holders.

Despite competition from other promoters, Varma remains optimistic about expanding the regional metal scene. He faces ongoing challenges with high venue and equipment rental costs, relying solely on ticket sales to fund his events. While Dubai boasts a significant population of metalheads, attendance at Resurrection events typically ranges from 150 to 300 people. “As economic migrants, not everyone cannot afford to come to each and every gig here in Dubai… it’s small but it’s intimate,” Varma explained.

With Desert Inferno shows booked through May 2026, Varma is focused on continuing to nurture the metal community in Dubai. He concludes, “If you’ve chosen the path as a metal band in India or a promoter in Dubai, as your career, then you know it’s a 50-50 [part-time] career. The moral of the story is to be resilient.”
