Remains Found in Ohio Linked to Disappearance of Indiana Teen Hailey Buzbee
The discovery marks a meaningful growth in the case of Hailey Buzbee, a 17-year-old who went missing from Indiana earlier this month.
The search for Hailey Buzbee, a 17-year-old reported missing from Fishers, Indiana, on January 6, has taken a tragic turn with the recovery of remains believed to be hers in Ohio. The proclamation came from Sam Shamansky, the attorney representing Tyler Thomas, a 39-year-old man accused in connection with her disappearance.
According to authorities,detectives began assisting Fishers police in locating Buzbee,leading them to focus on Thomas. An affidavit filed in Franklin County municipal Court revealed that Buzbee had been at Thomas’ residence on Hunter Avenue in north Columbus. Investigators believe the two initially connected through online gaming.
The inquiry further revealed that Buzbee was with Thomas at a short-term rental property in Hocking County, Ohio, where detectives now believe she was killed. on Monday, Hocking County deputies adn FBI crime scene investigators conducted an extensive search of the rental property for evidence. Authorities are withholding the precise location of the property at the FBI’s request to safeguard the ongoing investigation.
A search warrant executed on January 21 at Thomas’ home and on his electronic devices allegedly uncovered child sexual abuse material involving Buzbee. Thomas has been charged with pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and tampering with evidence. He appeared in Franklin County municipal Court for his arraignment on Monday, where a $1.5 million bond was set.
Following the arraignment, Shamansky stated that Thomas has been fully cooperative with investigators, aiming to provide the Buzbee family with as much closure as possible. He indicated that Thomas voluntarily surrendered to authorities on Saturday and actively collaborated with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to help locate buzbee’s remains.
“We grieve for this tragic loss of life and we grieve for the circumstances attendant to this loss and that’s why we, along with our client, took every difficult step necessary to assist,” Shamansky said.
While Thomas intends to plead not guilty “if and when he’s charged with a homicide in this matter,” he currently faces no charges directly related to buzbee’s death. Columbus Division of Police Sgt. Joe Albert indicated that the Hocking County Sheriff’s Office is preparing to file additional charges.
Investigators continue to examine evidence in both Franklin and Hocking counties as the investigation progresses.
