IndiGo Flight Cancellations Prompt Government Intervention, Schedule Cuts

The Indian government is poised to take significant action against IndiGo Airlines following a recent surge in flight cancellations and operational disruptions, signaling a firm stance on passenger rights and airline accountability. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan naidu has clarified that the government will curtail IndiGo’s winter flight schedule to ensure operational stability and minimize further inconvenience to travelers.
the crisis unfolded between December 1 and 8, leaving thousands of passengers stranded with canceled flights, extended wait times, and delayed baggage.IndiGo, which typically operates 2,200 flights daily, will see a reduction in its schedule, as confirmed by the civil aviation minister: “we will definitely reduce this.”
₹745 Crore in Refunds Issued to Affected Passengers
The government has already taken steps to address the immediate fallout, refunding approximately ₹745 crore (roughly $89 million USD) to passengers holding 730,655 canceled Passenger Name Records (PNRs). Efforts are also underway to locate and deliver delayed baggage, with 6,000 of nearly 9,000 misplaced bags already returned to passengers. Remaining bags are expected to be delivered by Tuesday. Minister Naidu is scheduled to address the situation in the Lok Sabha at 12 noon on Tuesday.
IndiGo Cites multiple Factors in Response to DGCA
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a show cause notice to IndiGo, demanding an explanation for the disruptions. The airline responded by attributing the issues to a confluence of factors,including technical glitches,winter schedule changes,adverse weather conditions,air traffic congestion,and the implementation of a new crew rostering system known as FDTL Phase II. Though, the regulator is continuing its review and considering further action.
High-level Meeting Convened to Address Industry-wide Concerns
The Civil Aviation Ministry has convened a high-level review meeting with all airline operators today to discuss a range of critical issues. Sources indicate the meeting will focus on establishing a timeline for IndiGo’s return to normal operations, reviewing passenger care and refund procedures, examining current air ticket price limits, and developing preventative measures to avoid similar disruptions in the future. Discussions will also cover slot allocation and the potential redistribution of capacity to othre airlines.
Market Value Plummets Amidst Crisis
The crisis has significantly impacted investor confidence in IndiGo. According to Reuters, the airline’s shares have fallen nearly 17% over the past seven days, resulting in a loss of $4.3 billion in market value. Monday alone saw an 8.3% drop in the share price, reflecting the severity of the situation.
