Jakarta, December 29, 2025 – The Indonesian government has begun construction on over 1,000 temporary housing units to aid residents displaced by devastating floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra provinces in late November.
Aid Efforts Underway as Sumatra Provinces Recover

More than 1,000 temporary homes are being built to shelter those affected by recent hydrometeorological disasters.
- As of December 28, 2025, 1,050 temporary housing units are under construction or completed.
- The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) is building 450 units, while state-owned enterprises are handling the remaining 600.

“As of December 28, 2025, construction of temporary housing in the affected provinces has started, with a total of 1,050 units either underway or already completed,” Coordinating minister for Human Development and culture Pratikno said Monday during a press conference in Jakarta.
Market Recovery a Key Focus
The recent hydrometeorological disasters have taken a heavy toll on local economies.In Aceh, 112 traditional markets where impacted, with only 18 having resumed normal operations. North Sumatra saw 47 markets affected, but a notable 46 have reopened. West Sumatra is also showing progress, with two out of three affected markets back in business, according to Pratikno.
The government has pledged to coordinate efforts between ministries and state agencies to expedite market recovery through infrastructure repairs and cleanup operations.
Transition to Rehabilitation Underway
More than half of the cities and districts across the three provinces have moved from the immediate emergency response phase to the transition stage of rehabilitation and reconstruction as of Monday. Seven districts and cities in Aceh have entered this phase, while 11 continue to operate under emergency protocols.
In North Sumatra, eight regions have transitioned to post-emergency status, with another eight maintaining emergency measures. West Sumatra reports rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts underway in 10 regions, with three still in the emergency response period.
“The regions that extended the emergency response period aim to better prepare for the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase,” Pratikno explained.
the government tasked Danantara, the nation’s sovereign wealth fund, with mobilizing state-owned enterprises to construct 15,000 temporary homes within three months. BNPB was assigned to build at least 4,500 units to ensure adequate shelter for displaced residents.
