Passenger Boat Capsizes in Indonesia, Leaving One Dead and One Missing

A passenger boat capsized off the coast of Indonesia’s North Maluku province on Friday, resulting in one confirmed fatality and leaving one individual unaccounted for, according to local authorities. Fifty-seven passengers were successfully rescued following the incident.

The vessel, carrying a total of 59 people, was en route from babang village to Pigaraja village in south Halmahera Regency when it encountered treacherous weather conditions. Strong winds and high waves near its destination ultimately lead to the boat overturning.
“The boat was hit by large waves and capsized,” a senior official stated. The incident prompted an immediate response from joint rescue teams who initiated evacuation operations.

Authorities confirmed that one passenger died as an inevitable result of the capsizing, while 57 individuals were pulled from the water and brought to safety. “Our personnel remain on standby in Pigaraja village and surrounding areas to continue search efforts for the missing person,” the official added. “The team is fully prepared to conduct further search and rescue operations.”
