Now let’s take a look at the important events that took place in the countries of the world today.

Earthquake in Indonesia; 56 people died

A strong, shallow earthquake toppled buildings and walls on Indonesia’s most populous main island of Java on Monday, killing at least 56 people and injuring hundreds.

Emergency workers were treating the injured on stretchers, terraces and parking lots outside major hospitals. Some, including children, were given oxygen, IV lines and resuscitated.

Residents, some with children in their arms, fled their damaged homes in tears after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Siangjur, West Java province, in the afternoon at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). It also caused panic in the greater Jakarta area, where tall buildings swayed and some were evacuated.

2 Iranian actresses arrested for not wearing hijab

Two prominent Iranian actresses, Hengameh Gaziani and Katayoun Riahi, were arrested by Iranian authorities on Sunday for appearing in public without headscarves, according to reports.

In an Instagram post, actress Cassiani wrote, “This may be my last post. From now on, know that no matter what happens, as always, I will stand with the people of Iran”. In the video, she stands without covering her head. She then ties her hair into a ponytail.

Ghasiani and Riahi have both won numerous awards and are well-known faces in Iran.

The actresses’ arrests come as protests in Iran, which began after the death of 22-year-old Mahza Amini in police custody in September, enter their second month. Amini was arrested for not wearing a headscarf or hijab, and early protests against her death involved some women not covering their hair in public.

Japan’s 3rd minister resigns

Japan’s internal affairs minister resigned on Sunday over financial fraud. He is the third cabinet member to quit in less than a month in a severe blow to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s already faltering support.

Kishida’s approval ratings have plummeted since the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July, which critics say has become a regular occurrence after revealing deep and long-standing ties between ruling Liberal Democratic Party politicians and the Unification Church.

Interior Minister Minoru Terada handed in his resignation letter to Kishida after media reports surfaced that the prime minister was preparing to fire him. Kishida’s office could not be reached for comment on the reports.

Volcanic eruption in Russia

Rising ash clouds and seeping lava from two volcanoes on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula could prompt further major eruptions, scientists say.

The peninsula, which stretches into the Pacific Ocean about 6,600 kilometers (4,000 mi) east of Moscow, is one of the world’s most concentrated areas of geothermal activity, with about 30 active volcanoes.

The sudden fresh eruption followed a strong earthquake on Saturday, news reports said. At 4,754 meters (almost 16,000 feet), Kluchevskaya Sobka, Eurasia’s highest active volcano, is recording 10 eruptions an hour, according to the Institute of Volcanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
