Indonesia Rain Alert: Heavy Forecast & Jakarta Update

by Ahmed Ibrahim World Editor

Jakarta is bracing for more rain. Indonesia’s rainy season will likely extend into the first ten days of February, fueled by ongoing monsoon activity and a weather phenomenon known as the Cross-Equatorial Northerly Surge (CENS), according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency.

Rainy Season to Persist Across Indonesia

The prolonged wet weather is expected to impact a wide swath of the archipelago, with potential for flooding and landslides.

  • the Cross-Equatorial Northerly Surge (CENS), triggered by cold air from Asia, is contributing to increased rainfall, particularly in jakarta.
  • A potential low-pressure system developing over northern Australia could exacerbate the situation.
  • Authorities are urging residents to prepare for hydrometeorological disasters like floods and landslides.

What’s driving the extended rainy season? The combination of a sustained Asian monsoon and the continued influence of the Cross-Equatorial Northerly Surge (CENS) is keeping rainfall levels high across Indonesia.

The agency’s Weekly Weather Outlook, covering january 30-February 5, 2026, indicates these systems have already caused widespread heavy rainfall in recent days and are expected to remain active. The CENS, identified by increased wind speeds in the Karimata Strait, typically brings early-morning showers to jakarta and surrounding areas.

Strong westerly winds are also impacting western and southern Indonesia, increasing atmospheric convergence and the formation of rain-bearing clouds over regions including West Sumatra, southern Sumatra, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Central and south Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, the Papua Highlands, and South Papua.

Looking ahead, meteorologists are monitoring a potential low-pressure system forming over the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia. If this system develops,it could intensify atmospheric convergence over southern Indonesia, raising the risk of even heavier rainfall.

“Given the significant weather potential, the public is urged to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to protect themselves, their families, and their surroundings from extreme weather that could trigger hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, and landslides,” the agency stated.
