Indonesian Navy Launches Major Relief Operation Following Sumatra Floods and Landslides
Indonesia is responding swiftly to devastating floods and landslides across North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh, with the Indonesian Navy spearheading a large-scale relief and evacuation effort. The operation, confirmed Friday by naval officials, aims to deliver critical aid and rescue residents impacted by the ongoing disaster.
Rapid Deployment of Naval Assets
The Navy has mobilized a comprehensive array of resources, including warships, helicopters, and elite troops, to address the widespread devastation. According to a senior naval official, hospital ships and patrol vessels are central to the operation. “The hospital support ships KRI Soeharso-990 and KRI Semarang-594 will support logistics delivery, troop movement, and evacuations,” the official stated.
Further bolstering the response are additional vessels – KRI Teluk Banten-516, KRI Teluk Gilimanuk-531, and KRI Teluk Celukan Bawang-532 – specifically tasked with transporting essential supplies such as tents, medical equipment, and rubber boats. The Navy has also deployed its newly acquired Italian-made vessel, KRI Brawijaya-320, to provide crucial logistical support.
Reaching Isolated Communities
Beyond its fleet of warships, the Navy is leveraging its air power and specialized units to reach communities cut off by floodwaters. Four helicopters from the Navy’s Aviation Center, alongside elite Kopaska amphibious commandos, are being deployed to evacuate trapped residents. “The Marine Health Battalion is also ready to provide medical services, establish field health posts, and provide emergency care for injured victims,” the official added. Aid packages are scheduled for delivery throughout the week, with the possibility of a second wave of assistance if conditions warrant.
Widespread Impact and Government Response
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reports that flash floods and landslides have impacted 13 districts in North Sumatra. Affected areas in West Sumatra include Agam, Padang Pariaman, Bukittinggi, Solok, and Padang. The situation is particularly dire in Aceh, where 10 of 23 districts have declared flood emergencies, displacing nearly 1,500 people and resulting in two confirmed fatalities.
President Prabowo Subianto has issued directives to accelerate aid delivery and emergency response efforts. Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno, working in coordination with the military, police, and regional governments, is actively mobilizing teams to ensure efficient logistics distribution.
The Indonesian government’s swift and comprehensive response underscores its commitment to supporting communities affected by these natural disasters. Authorities are hopeful that the ongoing relief efforts will expedite evacuations and provide much-needed assistance to those in need.
