Prema Racing’s future in IndyCar is increasingly uncertain as the team grapples with financial difficulties and leadership changes, while former sporting director Ryan Briscoe has moved to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL).
Briscoe, who guided drivers Robert Shwartzman and Callum Ilott during Prema’s inaugural IndyCar season, will now serve as a driver coach for Graham Rahal, Louis Foster, and Mick Schumacher at RLL. He is joined by Mike Pawlowski, who will engineer Schumacher in his first IndyCar campaign.
“Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has the foundation, infrastructure and commitment,” stated RLL president Jay Frye. “We have made multiple, impactful strategic additions this off season, the latest being Ryan and Mike as we position our IndyCar program to compete at a high level on a weekly basis.”
Prema’s Challenges Mount
The departure of Briscoe represents another setback for Prema, which has been plagued by speculation regarding its long-term viability. Earlier this month, Angelo Rosin, a co-founder of the team, and his son, Rene Rosin, the team principal, reportedly separated from the organization.
The team’s struggles were further highlighted by the absence of Shwartzman and Ilott from this week’s IndyCar content day, an event where all full-time drivers are typically present. Rumors suggest Prema is actively seeking new ownership, and there is a possibility the team will miss the season opener.
Financial concerns have shadowed Prema for some time. Despite Shwartzman’s impressive pole position at the Indianapolis 500, reports of financial instability were already circulating. The team’s ability to compete beyond 2026 remains unclear.
IndyCar Season Set to Begin
The IndyCar season is scheduled to commence on the streets of St. Petersburg from February 27th to March 2nd. While Prema’s participation remains in doubt, other teams are preparing for a competitive season. The addition of experienced personnel like Briscoe and Pawlowski to RLL signals a clear intent to elevate their performance and challenge for wins.
