Israeli ground forces have advanced to “the gates of Gaza City” in intense fighting with militants, the army said Wednesday, while hundreds of foreigners and dozens of seriously wounded Palestinians were allowed to leave Gaza after more than three weeks of siege.

The first people to leave Gaza – with the exception of the four hostages freed by Hamas and one more who was rescued by Israeli forces – crossed into Egypt, escaping the growing misery in the territory while bombings force thousands to abandon their homes and food, water and fuel become scarcethe.

The US State Department said those leaving the territory included some US citizens, although it did not go into details. He added that he plans to have more Americans and foreigners leave Gaza in the coming days. According to reports, negotiations are underway between Egypt, Israel and Qatar, which has been mediating with Hamas.

Heavy airstrikes destroyed residential buildings for the second day in a row in Jabaliya refugee camp, near Gaza City. Al Jazeera television broadcast images of injured people, including children, being taken to a hospital.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Israel and Jordan on Friday, his second trip to the region since the war began with Hamas’ violent incursion into southern Israel on October 7. Blinken will reiterate US support for the Israeli government, but will also seek to press to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches Palestinians in Gaza.
