Symptoms such as shortness of breath can often indicate not only problems with the lungs, but also, in particular, heart disease. Prim. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Julia Mascherbauer, Head of the Clinical Department of Internal Medicine 3 at the University Hospital St. Pölten, reports on common cardiological diseases and their innovative treatment options.

Shortness of breath is a symptom that is important in both pulmonology and cardiology. It manifests itself in various diseases, including valvular disease, pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, coronary heart disease and obesity. The latest developments in cardiology also offer good therapeutic measures for older patients through gentle procedures.

Innovations are emerging in interventional valve treatment including the durability of interventional aortic valve replacement (TAVI) and data on interventional mitral valve repair with the MitraClip. Mascherbauer also addresses balloon dilatation in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and presents new developments regarding a probeless pacemaker for arrhythmias. Absorbable stents for coronary heart disease and weight-loss injections for overweight patients are also discussed.

In the cardiology department of the St. Pölten University Hospital, around 500 valve procedures are carried out every year. Mascherbauer’s main focus is on transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), which has become established over the last 12 years and has moved from treating high-risk patients to broader use.
