Instagram is facing a growing backlash over its “repost” function, introduced in mid-2025, as users report accidental and embarrassing shares, igniting a debate over privacy and user experience on the platform. The ease with which the feature can be activated is at the heart of the issue, leading to unwanted content appearing on users’ profiles and raising questions about control over one’s digital footprint.
A wave of reports indicates that a simple touch – strategically positioned between the comment and share options – is enough to instantly republish content to a user’s profile, often without their knowledge. The result, according to numerous testimonials flooding social media, are “unpleasant surprises” discovered days later when unwanted photos or videos have already become part of a user’s online presence.
On TikTok, users like @jujubeaannn have voiced fears that the button’s placement could “ruin their lives,” a sentiment echoed by those who have inadvertently shared content from former partners or estranged acquaintances. One 23-year-old man, Kyle Ashley, shared his experience with The New York Times, recounting a panicked moment after accidentally reposting a reel while attempting to send it via direct message. “I panicked and thought, ‘I hope no one saw that,’” he confessed, expressing concern about exposing sensitive content even with careful profile management due to the actions of their contacts.
Interface Design and the User Experience
The confusion surrounding the repost button is compounded by its location, which has replaced the previous sharing option, according to Leah Ujda, a user experience expert at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The inconsistent layout of buttons – like, comment, share – depending on the type of content further complicates matters, hindering user adaptation.
Unlike platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, or X, which implement confirmation prompts before sharing, Instagram allows for one-click reposting. Ujda emphasizes that this lack of a safeguard limits user control over their digital image, as “everyone sees that you published it and then deleted it immediately,” potentially creating a negative perception. While Instagram has attempted to address the issue with animations and pop-up notices, these alerts often go unnoticed due to the speed with which many users navigate the application. The platform has introduced a notification bubble and initial notice, but continued errors suggest these measures are insufficient.
A Feature Driven by Demand, Met with Ambivalence
Instagram maintains that the repost function was implemented in response to community demand. However, the reception has been mixed. Recent changes to the platform’s navigation, prioritizing reels and direct messages, have also contributed to user discontent.
Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, has acknowledged that interface changes can be “annoying” and “frustrating,” but defends the application’s evolution as necessary to maintain relevance. He stated that the company takes “this type of changes very seriously” and aims to implement them infrequently. Content creator Ruby Vanhouten, with nearly 38,000 followers, described the repost button as a “cheap trap” designed to boost platform activity, joking that her Instagram feed often doesn’t reflect her true intentions. “Your Instagram feed doesn’t always know your heart and soul,” she noted.
Mitigating the Risk of Accidental Reposts
Instagram offers several solutions to help users avoid these mishaps. While the repost button cannot be removed, accidental reposts can be undone by tapping the same button on the erroneous publication. Users can also review and delete inadvertently shared content from the “Your activity” section, then “Reposts” within their profile settings.
Notably, users with private accounts have the option to restrict content republication by default. Public account users can deactivate the repost function entirely within the settings, under the “Share and reuse” section, by unchecking the relevant options for publications and reels. These measures aim to provide users with greater control over their online presence.
The controversy surrounding Instagram’s repost button underscores the ongoing tension between platform innovation and user privacy, highlighting the need for thoughtful design and clear communication in the ever-evolving landscape of social media.
