Instagram is rolling out an auto-scroll feature to some users, aiming to simplify how people consume content curated by its algorithm.
This new “Auto scroll” toggle appears in post settings, allowing users to activate an automatic scrolling main feed. This means you won’t have to manually swipe to see the next update.
It’s important to note this feature is for posts, not Reels. Reels already have an auto-scrolling function that can be turned off. However, with Reels making up a significant portion of content on the platform, this update could indirectly affect Reels viewing for some.
The primary focus is the main feed. If the algorithm is perfectly tuned to your interests, this could be a convenient way to keep up with content. It might also be useful in situations where you can’t easily touch your screen, like during a dental appointment.
But is it a good idea? Mindless scrolling is already a concern. Adding motionless scrolling might feel a bit like the mind-numbing scenarios seen in old films. Still, for certain people and situations, it could genuinely help them stay informed about topics they care about.
Platforms like TikTok and YouTube already offer auto-scrolling, eliminating the need for physical scrolling. This is likely a popular feature on those apps, hence Instagram’s move. Still, it does feel like a perhaps unnecessary addition, doesn’t it?
Maybe not. Either way, it appears this auto-scroll option is coming to all users soon.
Instagram has been asked for more details about this feature and its planned rollout across different regions. Updates will be provided if information becomes available.
