A new initiative by SUNU Assurances Burkina Faso aims to empower journalists with the knowledge needed to effectively communicate the value of insurance to the broader population. The company hosted a training workshop on October 23,2025,in Banfora, focused on the fundamentals of insurance adn best practices for reporting on the sector.
SUNU Assurances Burkina Faso recognizes that widespread understanding of insurance is crucial for its growth and, more importantly, for the economic resilience of communities across the country. The workshop, held as part of the company’s 4th Commercial Week (SEMCO), underscored the vital role the media plays in achieving this goal.
Bridging the Knowledge Gap
The training session, centered around the theme “insurance, a tool for economic resilience for households and local businesses,” provided approximately twenty journalists and communication professionals with a complete overview of insurance principles. Experts from SUNU Assurance vie Burkina Faso and SUNU Assurance IARD Burkina Faso led the sessions. Jean-Philippe Zombré, head of the reinsurance, studies, and actuarial department, and Ezéchiel Nabi, head of the subscriptions and collections department, guided participants through key concepts.
These concepts included a detailed exploration of risks, hazards, insurance contracts, and the distinctions between life insurance and non-life insurance (also known as IARD). Participants also examined various insurance products and the benefits insurance offers to individuals, families, and businesses. A key takeaway, according to one senior official, was that insurance is not solely for the wealthy. “insurance is not a matter for the rich. Rather, it is the best ally of vulnerable people,” the official stated.
The Future of Insurance: AI and Information Processing
The workshop also addressed emerging trends in the insurance industry. Participants learned that Artificial Intelligence is poised to revolutionize the sector, requiring insurers to adapt and innovate.
Another module, led by Victorien Sawadogo,a former editor-in-chief of Sidwaya and former secretary general of the ministry in charge of communication, focused on the effective processing and dissemination of insurance information. Discussions covered market analysis, insurance regulations, insurance law, and the identification of key risks and innovations within the industry.
A Long-Term Investment in Media capacity
The initiative builds on ongoing efforts by SUNU Assurances Burkina Faso to strengthen the capacity of the media, dating back to 2022. The company also established the SUNU Assurances Galian prize to further incentivize journalistic coverage of insurance-related topics.
Boukari Savadogo, deputy general director of SUNU assurances vie Burkina Faso, emphasized the importance of equipping journalists with the necessary expertise. “Every day,you cover insurance-related news. It is indeed crucial that you are equipped to master the sector. This will allow you to better understand the different parameters of life insurance and damage insurance,” he explained.
Djibril Kader Ouédraogo, deputy general director of SUNU Assurances IARD Burkina Faso, clarified that the goal is not simply to generate positive coverage for SUNU Assurances. Instead, the company aims to foster a broader understanding of insurance among the population. “If everyone understands insurance and 50% of the population is insured, SUNU will know how to fight in the market for its share of the pie,” he asserted.
This strategic investment in media education signals SUNU Assurances Burkina Faso’s commitment to not only expanding its market share but also to contributing to the financial security and economic well-being of the communities it serves.
