In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a committee of inquiry is examining the events surrounding the controversial climate protection foundation. The committee has presented a list of witnesses that includes prominent names.

The investigative committee of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to clarify the events surrounding the Climate Protection Foundation wants to hear Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig and former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (both SPD) as witnesses.

In its closed session, the committee decided, on the basis of an inter-party motion, to hear Schröder as a witness in his capacity as chairman of the supervisory board of Nord Stream 2. The exact dates of all witness interviews will be decided at a later date, the SPD parliamentary group announced after the meeting.

The foundation was founded at the beginning of 2021 to enable the completion of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline while circumventing US sanctions, which was successful. The special committee initiated by the opposition is to clarify, among other things, how great the influence of the Russian donors was on the then SPD/CDU state government when the foundation was founded. Nord Stream 2, a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned company Gazprom, was the largest donor to the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Climate Protection Foundation with 20 million euros.
