General Director of “South Caucasus Railway” CJSC Alexey Melnikov summarized the results of February’s work during the meeting held on March 2. As he mentioned, the volume of railway cargo transportation amounted to 219.4 tons, which is 0.5% higher than last year’s figure, the number of passengers exceeded 26.4 thousand, increasing by 8.4%. Moreover, international passenger traffic increased by 30%, domestic by 7.6%.
At the same time, taking into account the external economic situation, freight turnover (0.2% compared to the previous year), rail exports (23.5%) showed a slight decline against the background of a 13% increase in local transportation.
A number of qualitative indicators of railway work have also been improved, namely average train weight, average daily locomotive productivity and mileage, regional and technical speeds, productivity and turnover of freight cars.
The average monthly salary of railway workers also increased by 24% year-on-year, making 251 thousand drams. And labor productivity increased by about 1%.
All necessary measures and works aimed at train safety and infrastructure modernization are continuing in the South Caucasian Railway. In particular, the process of replacing the ankles has already started, the contact network, traction transformers are being repaired, the communication and telemechanics facilities are being upgraded.
“In 2020, it is planned to spend more than 4.4 billion drams in the investment program of the South Caucasian Railway, of which 1.8 billion will be directed to the modernization of the railway infrastructure, and 2.5 billion to the renewal of rolling stock,” the head of the company said.
Speaking about future plans, Alexey Melnikov mentioned the need to carefully consider all areas of the company’s work, build the most effective planning system, ensure the balance of various budget items, and attract new streams of railway workers and cargo.
As one of the priority issues, the head of the SCR mentioned the modernization of the safe traffic system of trains, the improvement of work safety, sanitary conditions in workplaces. The last point becomes especially important in the light of registering the first case of the new coronavirus in Armenia. In this regard, the head of the railway instructed to form a special working headquarters, to carry out necessary information work among the employees, to provide all the employees serving passenger transportation with additional protection means, cleaning and disinfecting means. Such steps are aimed at preventing illness among the company’s employees.
“Soon the holiday season will start in schools and it is necessary to work extra with the children, explaining to them the concern of the railways, that any games near the tracks are prohibited. Together with the local authorities, it is necessary to carry out information work among the residents of cities and villages, taking into account that there are garbage heaps, unauthorized structures, and parks in the vicinity of the railway. The issue of livestock grazing near the railway lines is particularly relevant, which is dangerous for both animals and railway transport,” the general director of the company emphasized.
