(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 22 – A “mass grave” with at least 65 bodies has been discovered in southwestern Libya. The International Organization for Migration reports this in a note. “The circumstances of their death and their nationality remain unknown, but it is believed that they died while being transported clandestinely across the desert – adds the IOM -. This latest tragedy highlights the urgent need to address the challenges of irregular migration, through a coordinated response to migrant smuggling. Without regular pathways for legal migration, such tragedies will continue to be a feature along this route.” “The Libyan authorities are investigating these deaths”, continues the IOM statement which “calls on Libya, together with the United Nations partner agencies, to ensure a dignified recovery, identification and transfer of the remains of deceased migrants, as well as to notify and adequately assist their families.” According to the Missing Migrants Project, the IOM adds, in 2023 at least 3,129 deaths and disappearances were recorded along the Mediterranean route, excluding this latest episode. “IOM calls on all governments and authorities along the route to strengthen regional cooperation to ensure the safety and protection of migrants, regardless of their status and at all stages of their journey.” (HANDLE).
