iOS 26.2 Release Candidate unveils ‘Liquid Glass’ Design and Enhanced Features

Apple has released the iOS 26.2 Release Candidate (RC) to developers, signaling the imminent arrival of a major software update expected to reach the public within the next week. The RC, identified by Build Number 23C52, introduces a host of refinements, headlined by a striking new “Liquid Glass” aesthetic and improvements across several core applications.

A Fluid New Look with ‘Liquid Glass’

The most visually prominent change in iOS 26.2 RC is the implementation of “Liquid Glass.” This design element is most noticeable in the revamped “X” notification button on the lock screen, which now boasts a shimmering, fluid appearance. The effect extends to the “Clear All Notifications” touch as well. According to a company release, users opting for the “Tinted Liquid Glass” display setting will receive a warning: the feature is incompatible with both “Reduce Transparency” and “Increase Contrast” modes, and will automatically disable them if enabled.

Enhanced animations and User Interface

beyond the visual overhaul, Apple has focused on refining the user experience through improved animations. The transition animations when tapping to open menus – such as the ellipsis button and submenus within the home screen editing interface – have been made more consistent with the “Liquid Glass” aesthetic. The Measure app also receives an animation upgrade, further embracing the fluid design language.

Key Feature Updates Across the Ecosystem

The iOS 26.2 RC delivers a range of functional enhancements:

  • Lock Screen: Users now have granular control over the clarity of the clock settings displayed on the lock screen.
  • AirDrop: A new “Manage Known AirDrop Contact” menu has been added to AirDrop settings, allowing users to establish file transfer permissions for unknown contacts via a time-limited AirDrop code (valid for up to 30 days).
  • Sleep Score: Apple has recalibrated its sleep score system to better align with individual sleep patterns. The scoring breakdown is as follows:
    • Very Low: 0-40 points (previously 0-29)
    • Low: 41-60 points (previously 30-49)
    • Good (OK): 61-80 points (previously 50-69)
    • High: 81-95 points (previously 70-89)
    • very High: 96-100 points (previously 90-100)
Notably, Apple has replaced the term “Excellent” with “Very High” in the sleep score categorization.
  • Settings: A new option to enable LED Flash for notifications has been added (Settings > Accessibility > Sound & Visual > Flash Alerts). Users can also now view a list of websites for which password saving has been explicitly disabled (settings > Apps > Passwords) via a “Show Excluded Websites” menu.
  • Podcast: The podcast app gains several enhancements, including automatic chapter detection indicators, the ability to select chapters within sub-episodes, and a “Podcast Mention” feature for show hosts to highlight specific links or segments. A “From This Episode” function clarifies the origin of the currently playing podcast segment.
  • Reminders: A splash screen will now introduce new features within the Reminders app. Siri Suggestion messages have also been improved, and a dedicated “Urgent” button has been added, displaying reminders like clock alarms.
  • Freeform: The freeform app now supports the addition of tables.
  • Games: Users can now sort their installed games by size, name, and most recent installation date.
  • AirPods Live Translation: Support for Live translation on AirPods has been expanded to include European Union countries.
