Apple’s iOS 26 Roadmap: Digital IDs, RCS, and a smarter Siri on the Horizon

Apple continues its relentless pace of software innovation, with the first developer beta of iOS 26.1 anticipated to arrive soon following the release of iOS 26 this week. While iOS 18.1 represented an outlier with its early beta release – driven by the need for extensive testing of Apple Intelligence features – the company is expected to revert to its typical september timeframe for the iOS 26.1 beta cycle, mirroring the release schedules of iOS 15.1, 16.1, and 17.1. Over the next year, spanning updates from iOS 26.1 to 26.4, a suite of new features are slated to roll out, tho Apple cautions that this represents only a portion of the planned enhancements.

Digital Passport: A Secure ID in Your Wallet

One of the most anticipated additions is a digital version of the U.S. passport, integrated directly into Apple’s Wallet app. However, this feature has experienced delays. According to Apple’s documentation, the “Digital ID” feature will arrive via a future “software update,” though a specific version number remains undisclosed. The company hopes to deliver the functionality with either iOS 26.1 or iOS 26.2.

Once implemented, the Digital Passport will allow users to securely store and present their identification facts on their iPhones and Apple Watches, streamlining travel and verification processes. The feature is being developed in collaboration with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and select state departments.

RCS 3.0: Bridging the Messaging gap

The upgrade to RCS 3.0 will bring a host of iMessage-like enhancements to cross-platform conversations, including:

  • End-to-end encryption, ensuring message privacy.
  • In-line replies for threaded conversations.
  • The ability to edit sent messages.
  • A function to unsend messages.
  • Full support for “Tapback” reactions.

Currently, RCS on iPhone operates as a modernized fallback for SMS, but Apple’s adoption of RCS 3.0 promises a more feature-rich and secure experience. iMessage already boasts many of these capabilities – end-to-end encryption since iOS 5, in-line replies since iOS 14, and edit/unsend functionality introduced with iOS 16 – and Apple is expected to close the gap during the iOS 26 software cycle.

A More Intuitive Siri

Apple CEO Tim cook recently affirmed that progress is “good” on a more personalized version of siri, with a launch targeted for next year. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman anticipates the revamped Siri will debut in the U.S.in spring 2026, potentially aligning with the iOS 26.4 release.

Originally announced at WWDC 2024 but afterward delayed, the new siri will leverage on-screen awareness, deeper app integration, and contextual understanding. Apple demonstrated a scenario were Siri could respond to queries about a user’s mother’s flight and lunch plans by accessing information from Mail and Messages.

Satellite Connectivity Expands?

References to an unreleased “Weather via satellite” feature were discovered in the code of the first iOS 26 developer beta by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris. While Apple has yet to officially announce or release the feature, its continued presence in the iOS 26 Release Candidate suggests it may still be under development. The functionality would allow users to access weather forecasts in areas lacking Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, building upon apple’s existing suite of satellite features – Emergency SOS, Messages, Find My, and Roadside Assistance.

New Emoji Arriving with iOS 26.4

Users can anticipate a fresh batch of emoji with the release of iOS 26.4. The Unicode Consortium previewed several new emoji in July, celebrating World Emoji day, including a trombone, treasure chest, distorted face, hairy creature (Bigfoot/Sasquatch), fight cloud, apple core, orca, ballet dancers, and landslide.

Apple typically takes several months to design these new emoji in its signature style, and based on past releases – iOS 18.4 in late March, and prior updates in iOS 17.4, 16.4, and 15.4 – the new additions are likely to arrive with iOS 26.4.
