Apple’s Next-Gen iPad Pro Poised to Tackle Thermal Issues with Vapor Chamber Cooling

Apple’s forthcoming iPad Pro, powered by the anticipated M6 processor, could be the company’s first tablet to utilize a vapor chamber cooling system, potentially resolving overheating concerns that have plagued recent models.

Apple recently released products featuring the M5 processor, but early reports indicate thermal limitations. According to industry analysis, the next generation of iPad Pro, expected next year, will address these issues with a significant cooling upgrade. The move signals Apple’s commitment to maintaining peak performance in its increasingly powerful mobile devices.

M5 Processor Faced Thermal Throttling

The recently launched M5 chip, featured in both the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro lines, has demonstrated a propensity for overheating under heavy workloads. One report indicated the M5 chip in the MacBook Pro reached 99°C under load, triggering performance throttling to prevent damage. This limitation prompted Apple to differentiate the iPad Pro M5 from its MacBook Pro counterpart.

“The new iPad Pro M5 can’t stay cool enough and faces a thermal limitation of the chip,” a source explained. As a result, the entry-level iPad Pro M5 features a 9-core processor and 10-core GPU, while the entry-level MacBook Pro M5 boasts a 10-core processor and 10-core GPU. This suggests Apple deliberately scaled back the iPad Pro’s processing power to manage heat.

Vapor Chamber Technology: A Solution for the M6

To prevent a recurrence of these issues with the more powerful M6 processor, Apple appears set to adopt vapor chamber cooling technology. This advanced system, already implemented in the recently released iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max smartphones, efficiently dissipates heat away from critical components.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported in his “Power On” newsletter that Apple will reportedly integrate a vapor chamber cooling system into the next-generation iPad Pro M6. Currently, the iPad Pro M5 utilizes a graphene sheet for heat transfer, relying on the aluminum case as a heatsink. However, this configuration proved insufficient to maintain optimal temperatures.

The implementation of vapor chamber technology promises to improve both performance and heat management, ensuring the M6 processor can sustain high performance levels without experiencing overheating or temperature throttling. This upgrade is crucial as the M6 processor is expected to be even more powerful than its predecessor, potentially exacerbating thermal challenges.
