Apple kicked off a busy week of product announcements on Monday with the unveiling of the iPhone 17e, a new addition to the iPhone 17 family positioned as a more affordable option. Alongside the new smartphone, the company similarly announced the M4 iPad Air, boasting a significant performance upgrade. The announcements were discussed by Benjamin Mayo and Chance Miller on the 9to5Mac Happy Hour podcast, signaling a flurry of activity from Apple as the week progresses.
The iPhone 17e aims to deliver value with features like a faster processor, an upgraded camera system, and improved durability. It’s powered by the latest-generation A19 chip, and features the C1X cellular modem, which Apple claims is up to two times faster than the C1 modem found in the iPhone 16e. The device also includes a 48MP Fusion camera capable of capturing stunning photos and 4K Dolby Vision video, and features an optical-quality 2x Telephoto lens. Notably, the iPhone 17e will start with 256GB of storage – double the base storage of the previous generation – at a price of $599, according to Apple’s press release.
The new iPhone 17e also incorporates Ceramic Shield 2, offering three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation, and reduced glare on its 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display. MagSafe connectivity has been added, enabling quick wireless charging and compatibility with a range of accessories. Apple’s satellite features – Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My via satellite – will also be available on the iPhone 17e, providing connectivity even without cellular or Wi-Fi access. The phone will be available in black, white, and a new soft pink color, with pre-orders starting Wednesday, March 4, and availability beginning Wednesday, March 11.
M4 iPad Air Brings Performance Boost
Alongside the iPhone 17e, Apple announced the M4 iPad Air. The device features the A19 chip, which Apple says delivers up to two times faster performance than the iPhone 11. The 16-core Neural Engine is optimized for large generative models, enhancing the iPad Air’s capabilities for demanding tasks. The M4 iPad Air also includes Apple’s latest-generation C1X modem, offering up to two times faster cellular performance compared to the iPhone 16e. The front of the device now features Ceramic Shield 2, offering improved scratch resistance and reduced glare.
The M4 iPad Air also brings MagSafe connectivity and supports wireless charging up to 15W with a 20W adapter or higher – a significant upgrade from the 7.5W wireless charging supported by the previous generation. Wired charging is also faster, achieving up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes. Battery life remains at 26 hours. The rear camera features an improved Portrait mode image pipeline with automatic object detection and support for next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control.
